Visitors to the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle could see a Canadian exhibit set beside the Palace of the Aztecs and Incas, a building styled after the ancient architecture of Mexico and Peru. The fair was held on the Champ de Mars and marked the centennial of the French Revolution, and it drew millions of visitors to its national pavilions, colonial displays and ethnographic exhibits. This albumen print, made on paper coated with egg white, shows how the fair's foreign sections were arranged side by side, with national exhibits and reconstructed buildings competing for attention.
