The courtyard shown here is most likely part of the Tunisia pavilion, though the record lists that attribution with a question mark, so the identification is not certain. The picture was taken during the Exposition Universelle of 1889 in Paris, a world's fair held to mark the centennial of the French Revolution and remembered today mainly for the Eiffel Tower built as its centerpiece. Tunisia had been a French protectorate since 1881, and its exhibits drew visitors to arcaded, ornamental buildings meant to evoke North African architecture. The print is an albumen print, the dominant photographic process of the 1880s, and its arches and shaded court show how the fair presented foreign design to a Parisian audience.
