This tinted lithograph presents the New York Crystal Palace as its backers hoped it would look, published around 1852, a year before the glass and iron building opened in July 1853 on Reservoir Square, the site now occupied by Bryant Park. The architects, Carstensen & Gildemeister, modeled the hall on London's Crystal Palace of 1851, and the small figures crowding the grounds, drawn by Doepler, suggest the fashionable public the exhibition hoped to attract. The view shows how a young American city wanted to present itself on the international stage of industry and design.
