The title promises a single product for every need, and the catalog's subject headings, which pair soap with hygiene and frontier and pioneer life, suggest the poster links cleanliness to the rugged conditions of the American West. Procter & Gamble copyrighted it in 1898, a decade after it had introduced Ivory soap in 1879, and by then the brand was among the most heavily advertised household goods in the country. The Strobridge Lithographing Company, which printed the sheet in Cincinnati and New York, used chromolithography, a color process that let advertisers produce bold, flat hues on large posters. The print has since appeared in the Library of Congress exhibition *American Treasures* and in a Williams College show on American art and early film.
