Drawn from high above the Battery at the southern tip of Manhattan, this color lithograph looks across the harbor to show New York and Brooklyn side by side. The view is credited to a draftsman named Simpson, with the lithographic work by Th. Muller, and its title appears in both French and Spanish, suggesting it was meant for an international market. In the 1850s Brooklyn was still a separate city across the East River, so the print records two municipalities that would not join until 1898. Bird's-eye views like this were popular in the period because they let viewers take in a crowded waterfront at a glance.
