The Fulton Fish Market sat on the East River waterfront at the foot of Fulton Street in lower Manhattan, where boats unloaded their catch onto the piers and wholesalers sold it by the crate before dawn. This print, dated to roughly 1930 to 1950 by the Library of Congress, shows the working waterfront that made the market one of the busiest seafood hubs on the East Coast. Its long history stretches back to the early 1800s, and the cluster of piers and sheds in pictures like this one reflects a trade that depended on daylight-free hours, cold storage and fast handling. Look closely at the wharves and the way goods moved across them to see how the market operated before refrigerated trucking reshaped it.
