Fulton Street, the broad thoroughfare that ran down to the East River ferry landing at the foot of Manhattan, appears here just after crews had plowed it open. The Blizzard of March 1888 struck the city on March 12 and 13, dropping well over a foot of snow and bringing elevated trains, streetcars, and commerce to a halt for days. Clearing the main arteries was a slow, labor-intensive job, and images like this one document how the city dug itself out. The print is a useful record of how much snow the storm left behind and how it reshaped street life.
