Few details survive in this record beyond a title, a date of 1859, and the note that the engraving is colored, so the print is best understood through its moment. In 1859 New York was growing fast, with roughly 800,000 people living in the city by the 1860 census. Central Park was under construction that year, and the city was expanding northward across Manhattan. Colored city views like this one were popular among merchants and families who wanted a decorative image of a rapidly changing metropolis.
