This view from Morningside Park shows the steep bluff of Cathedral Heights, with an elevated railroad line running through the scene and the masonry of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine rising in the background. Work on the cathedral began in 1892 and continued for decades, so the photograph captures a building still far from finished. The juxtaposition of an unfinished church and a noisy elevated line reflects how quickly Upper Manhattan was changing around the turn of the twentieth century. The record's date of about 1902 is unverified, but the scene fits that period of rapid transit growth and building.
