Captioned "New York beauties" at an Atlantic City carnival, this September 1922 group portrait shows women posed on the beach in the bathing costumes of the day. It comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the news photographs supplied to newspapers across the country by Bain's New York agency. Atlantic City was then a leading seaside resort, and its boardwalk pageants helped shape the beauty contests that followed, including the Miss America pageant first held there in 1921. Notice the heavy wool suits with their skirts and stockings, which look modest beside later swimwear.
