Naval aviator Richard E. Byrd appears in this July 1930 view, taking in Chicago a few months after returning from his expedition to Antarctica. He had gained wide fame in 1929 for flying over the South Pole, and his city visits drew large public interest. The photograph was made by Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm known for its portrait and press work of the period, and its subject list also tags crowds of sightseers, which points to the attention the visit attracted.
