Few churches in the city look as striking after dark as St. Patrick's Cathedral does here, its pale marble spires lit against the night sky. Designed by James Renwick Jr. in the Gothic Revival style, the cathedral on Fifth Avenue was dedicated in 1879, and by the 1910s it had become one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Night views like this were still unusual around 1912, when electric lighting was beginning to change how New York's buildings appeared after sunset.
