Steaming toward New York Harbor in May 1956, the submarine Nautilus was the first vessel of her kind, powered by a nuclear reactor instead of diesel engines. The Navy commissioned her in September 1954 after she was built at Groton, Connecticut, and her reactor allowed long stretches submerged that conventional submarines could not match. Shown in this three-quarter port view, her hull and sail reveal the low, streamlined profile that set her apart from earlier boats. The Navy photoprint, held in the Granik Collection, captures a time when atomic power was still a new symbol of American technology.
