The White Star liner Olympic, seen here passing through the Narrows, was a familiar sight to New Yorkers in 1911. The Narrows is the strait between Staten Island and Brooklyn that ocean liners crossed on their way into the harbor. Built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast and entering service in 1911, the Olympic was among the largest passenger ships afloat, and its sister ship, the Titanic, later became far more famous. The photoprint was made by William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer known for views of ships and waterfronts. The date and other details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
