A two-color lithograph measuring about 41 by 29 1/2 inches, this panorama takes in the Narrows, the strait between Staten Island and Brooklyn, in one wide sweep of water and shoreline. Dated 1854 and issued under the Goupil & Co. imprint, it reflects the mid-century appetite for large panoramic prints that let viewers take in a busy waterfront all at once. The Narrows was the entrance ships used to reach New York from the Lower Bay, so a view that includes it shows the approach that carried trade and passengers into the port. The record notes that the publisher attribution is unverified and that the shelflist card links the print to a different firm, so the imprint is best read with some caution.
