Few views on this board show the quarantine grounds on the northwestern shore of Staten Island, where ships bound for New York were held for inspection before passengers and cargo could come ashore. The marine hospital there treated sailors and immigrants who fell ill at sea, and the station grew busier during cholera and yellow fever scares, including the cholera year of 1854 that this view is dated to. The shelflist card links the print to the firm Brown & Quinlan, but the record marks that data as unverified, so the exact maker remains an open question for researchers.
