The view shows the quarantine station on Staten Island, where ships arriving at New York were held and inspected before their passengers and cargo could move into the city. Its location at the harbor mouth made it a working checkpoint for incoming vessels, a role that grew more pressing in the 1820s and 1830s, when port authorities worried about yellow fever and cholera. The print was painted and engraved by W.J. Bennett, an English-born artist known for aquatint views of American harbors and cities, and it was published in New York around 1833 by Parker & Co. and Lewis P. Clover. Its hand coloring and the boats in the foreground make it useful for seeing how the harbor looked in that period.
