The Merchant's Exchange on Wall Street was among the most prominent commercial buildings in lower Manhattan when this print was made, the business heart of a city then growing fast on shipping and trade. The record dates the image to about 1837, a year of financial panic that hit New York merchants hard, so the building would have stood at the center of anxious talk about credit and cargoes. The card catalog attached to the print also names J.H. Bufford, a Boston lithographic printer, though that attribution is unverified and should be read with caution. Viewers today can compare the scene's crowded street and dense masonry with the city's later skyline.
