The title makes the joke explicit: this is not the New York Stock Exchange but a "patronage exchange," with the U.S. Senate's trading floor standing in for the stock market. Published in *Puck* on April 13, 1881, the color lithograph by J.A. Wales casts Senate politicians as brokers haggling over federal jobs. Chester A. Arthur, a New Yorker who had risen through the Republican machine, is among the figures named in its record. In spring 1881, fights over appointments in New York were tearing at the Republican Party under President Garfield, and *Puck*, a New York humor weekly, turned that feud into a satire of Wall Street-style dealing.
