New York's civic pride is the hook in this 1917 lithograph by the W.F. Powers Company, which offers the state the chance to win the right to fly a special flag if it helps the cause. The poster ties two wartime efforts together: the Liberty Loan drives that financed American entry into the First World War, and the Rainbow Division, the National Guard division drawn from many states that fought in France in 1918. Posters like this were printed in large numbers and displayed in shop windows and public spaces, where they presented buying bonds as a patriotic duty.
