The slogan on this lithograph asks each household to save one loaf a week, a modest pledge framed as a contribution to the war effort. It is number 3 in the U.S. Food Administration's poster series, issued in 1917 by the W. F. Powers Co. of New York. Herbert Hoover led the agency, which was created that year to encourage voluntary conservation of wheat, meat, and fats while Allied nations depended on American grain. Posters like this one carried the program into homes, schools, and shop windows.
