A wartime poster from 1917 urging Americans to save a loaf a week, a plea that reached kitchens across the country as food supplies were stretched by the war in Europe. The United States entered World War I in April 1917, and the federal Food Administration, led by Herbert Hoover, asked households to cut back on wheat and other staples so that more grain could be shipped to the Allies and to troops overseas. Posters like this one turned rationing into a patriotic duty, with the slogan tying a small domestic sacrifice to the larger effort to win the war.
