This color lithograph shows the Exchange, the trading floor of New York's stock market, at a time when Wall Street was the center of the young city's finance. Lower Manhattan was growing fast in the 1850s, and the crowded brokers' and merchants' district around Wall Street reflected the commercial boom that made New York the nation's leading port and financial hub. The print's catalog lists it as an advertisement, so it was probably made to promote a business or a publisher as much as to record a scene. Its two credited artists, C. Autenrieth and J. Bornet, were working in the mid-century lithography trade, which turned out many such city views for sale to merchants and the public.
