Bachmann's view of New York looks down on the southern tip of Manhattan, taking in Battery Park along the waterfront and Governors Island out in the harbor. He drew the scene in the bird's-eye manner that was popular for American cities in the 1870s, and G. Schlegel printed it as a color lithograph. The sheet was entered for copyright at Washington in 1874, which dates it to that year. Viewers interested in how the city's edges looked at the time will find the park and the harbor shown with the close attention to street and shoreline detail the form was known for.
