This bird's-eye view takes in the southern tip of Manhattan, with the Battery's waterfront and Governors Island in the harbor beyond, as seen from high above the water. Lithographs like this one, printed in color around 1874, were popular in the 1870s, when city panoramas let viewers take in the crowded streets, piers, and shipping at a glance. The print was drawn by G. Schlegel and issued by the firm of Tamsen & Dethlefs, with its copyright entered by John Bachmann, a well-known New York lithographer of such views. It is worth looking closely at the harbor and the waterfront edge, where the city's commercial life met the water.
