In January 1924, former Treasury Secretary William Gibbs McAdoo presented a replica of the Roosevelt trophy to Yakima Canutt, the world champion cowboy, in New York City. Rodeo was then a popular spectacle in the East, and the presentation shows how a Western sport from the ranges and fairgrounds had found a place in the city's big-event culture. Canutt, a Washington State native, later became one of the best-known stunt performers and second-unit directors in Hollywood Westerns, so this moment came early in a career that would reach the movies.
