The Park Row Building, finished in 1899, rises at the center of this color view and was for a short time among the tallest office buildings in the world. Its neighbor, the Saint Paul Building, had gone up a year earlier, and together they show how quickly lower Manhattan was climbing skyward at the turn of the century. The print was made by the Detroit Publishing Company using the photochrom process, a Swiss method that combined photographs with hand-applied color stones, and it was one of many city views the company produced for catalogs and sales use.
