A color poster for the Sunday edition of the New York Journal, dated March 22, promises readers a look at "the wickedest city in the world." Printed in Philadelphia by H.I. Ireland in 1896, it reflects the circulation battles of the mid-1890s, when Hearst's Journal and Pulitzer's World competed with bold color, sensational stories, and illustrated Sunday pages. The slogan also tapped into the public debate over vice and corruption in New York, which had intensified after Rev. Charles Parkhurst's 1892 attacks on the city's police and officials. The artist's name, Brill, appears in the title.
