This view looks down the intersection of Exchange Place and Broad Street, where the Blair Building stands among the banking and brokerage houses of Lower Manhattan's financial district. The photograph dates to about 1932, only a few years after the 1929 stock market crash, when the district's towering office blocks were still a symbol of the city's commercial power. It was made by the commercial firm Irving Underhill, Inc., which sold copyrighted street views of New York in the 1930s. Such photographs now record the streetscape, signage and dense cornice lines of a neighborhood that was about to change under Depression-era hardships.
