Few corners of Manhattan carry as much early history as the intersection of Broad and Pearl Streets at the edge of Bowling Green. Pearl Street follows the old shoreline of the East River from the Dutch colonial period, and Bowling Green, set aside in the 1730s, is the oldest public park in the city. This view from about 1917 shows a telephone company building standing among these older streets, as Lower Manhattan was filling with commercial structures. The print was copyrighted by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer, and its record notes the Copyright Office registration number.
