At Fifth Avenue and 35th Street, the Best & Co. store anchored a busy stretch of Manhattan's most fashionable shopping thoroughfare. Photographer Irving Underhill captured the scene around 1917, when double-decker motor buses were becoming a common sight on the avenue. By then Fifth Avenue had grown into a premier retail boulevard, and the display windows in the picture were designed to draw in pedestrians and passengers alike. The photograph documents both the store's street frontage and the transition from older street life to motor traffic in the 1910s.
