Looking south down Fifth Avenue from 35th Street, this view places the Waldorf-Astoria at the center of one of the city's most fashionable thoroughfares. The hotel grew from two neighboring properties built by the Astor family: the Waldorf opened in 1893, and the Astoria followed in 1897, after which the two were joined under one name. Photographer J.S. Johnston, a New York view and marine specialist, registered the print for copyright around 1899, when Fifth Avenue was lined with mansions, clubs and hotels rather than the department stores that later came to dominate it.
