This photograph documents a corner of lower Broadway at Exchange Place, where 52 Broadway stood a few blocks from the New York Stock Exchange on Broad Street. In the 1920s this part of Manhattan's financial district was crowded with office buildings, and streets like Exchange Place were lined with tall commercial blocks that housed brokers, banks, and law firms. The print was made by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer who registered his views for copyright, so it reflects the commercial street photography common in the city at the time. Look at the street-level detail and the way the building meets the corner to see how dense, vertical construction shaped everyday life downtown.
