Few buildings in turn-of-the-century Manhattan were built around a single immigrant community quite like the German American Building, pictured here around 1908. Its catalog entry classifies it as a meeting place for organizations, which fits a period when New York's German-speaking residents supported a dense network of clubs, singing societies, benevolent associations and lodges, many of them with headquarters of this kind. The photograph is by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer whose city views were registered for copyright, a practice that shows how commercial street and building views of the era were made and circulated.
