Where Broadway meets Reade Street in lower Manhattan, the Dun Building anchors the corner, and this 1916 view records its street front during the years when it was home to a major commercial firm. The record ties the building to the Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada, which maintained facilities in the structure and used it as a New York base for its business. Designed by architect George B. Post and finished in 1899, the building reflects the period's confidence in steel-frame office towers clad in masonry. Photographer Irving Underhill, who registered the image for copyright, documented many New York streetscapes in the early twentieth century.
