The Cunard Building, the steamship line's New York headquarters at the lower end of Broadway, anchors this view, with pedestrians crossing the street below its classical facade. Irving Underhill, a New York photographer who registered his work for copyright, made the picture around 1921, the period when the building was new. The scene also reaches into the Stone Street Historic District, one of Manhattan's oldest surviving streets, whose cobbled lanes date to the Dutch colonial era and preserve a sense of the city's earliest layout.
