Chambers Street, in Lower Manhattan near City Hall Park, was a financial and civic corridor, and this photograph documents the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank's building at No. 51 when the picture was taken around 1912. The bank was founded in 1850 to serve immigrant workers, many of them Irish, who had little access to mainstream banking, so its headquarters stood for a particular kind of thrift and community trust. The print was made by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer whose copyright registration is noted on the record, and it captures how a commercial office building of the period presented itself on a busy downtown street.
