Grant's remains were first held in a temporary vault on a bluff above the Hudson in Riverside Park after he died at Mount McGregor in July 1885. The picture, dated around 1885, shows that early resting place rather than the granite mausoleum dedicated on the site in 1897. Grant's funeral drew very large crowds to the streets of Manhattan, and the park site soon became a national landmark. The date comes from an old caption card and is unverified, so it should be read as approximate.
