From a high vantage point at 72nd Street, this view looks down the length of Riverside Drive, the curving boulevard that runs along the Hudson on Manhattan's West Side. The drive and the park beside it were laid out in the 1870s and 1880s under a plan associated with Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and by the 1910s the avenue had become a fashionable address for residents and a place to ride and walk. The catalog record credits the photographer Irving Underhill and a U.S. copyright registration, though its date of about 1911 is marked as unverified. The picture is useful for seeing how the new street fit its wooded bluff above the river.
