Riverside Drive, the curving boulevard that follows the Hudson along Manhattan's West Side, is the subject of this July 1916 view. The street grew out of late nineteenth-century plans for a riverside park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, meant to give the Upper West Side a leafy promenade above the water. Because the picture was submitted for copyright, it records how the avenue looked to the city at a time when new apartment buildings and automobiles were changing its character.
