The Brooklyn Bridge is the detail that anchors this view of New York Harbor, its great stone towers and web of cables rising above the water. Completed in 1883 after roughly fourteen years of construction, the bridge was the longest suspension span in the world at the time and linked Manhattan with the then separate city of Brooklyn. Designed by John A. Roebling and completed under his son Washington Roebling, it became a symbol of the city's ambitions and its growing industrial might. Look closely at the harbor below and you can sense the busy waterfront that made the bridge necessary.
