The Brooklyn Bridge is the particular subject here, shown in a color lithograph by Parsons and Atwater that Currier & Ives published around 1874, while the bridge was still under construction. The print presents the span as a triumph of engineering linking Manhattan and Brooklyn, with the East River below crowded with sailing vessels and steamboats that moved through the harbor. Designed by John A. Roebling and completed under his son Washington Roebling, the bridge opened in 1883 and became one of the city's defining landmarks. Prints like this one helped the public follow a project that many New Yorkers watched rise over the water.
