Looking east from the Brooklyn end, this stereograph frames the long span of the Brooklyn Bridge as it runs toward Manhattan, with an elevated railroad line visible along the structure. The bridge opened in 1883, designed by John A. Roebling and completed under his son Washington Roebling, and by the late 1890s its deck carried trains, cable cars, wagons, and pedestrians side by side. Strohmeyer & Wyman issued the card around 1899 for home stereoscope viewers, which were a popular way for Americans of that era to see distant cities in three dimensions. The pairing of the bridge's arching cables with the crowded rail line shows how quickly the city's transit had expanded by the turn of the century.
