The lower end of the Mall in Central Park is the formal, tree-lined promenade that Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux laid out as part of the park's original design, a place built for strolling and seeing and being seen. This c1901 view comes from a photochrom print, a color process developed in Switzerland and widely used by the Detroit Photographic Company, which hand-colored its images from multiple stones. The company assembled albums like this one as a catalog of its views, so the picture was meant to show potential buyers what the firm could produce. Its saturated greens and soft tones give a sense of how the park looked at the turn of the twentieth century.
