At 9:30 on the night of October 8, 1910, seven-year-old Jerald Schaitberger was on Columbus Circle in New York, helping an older boy sell newspapers until 10 p.m. Paul B. Schumm made the photograph, which was filed among the street-trades pictures in Lewis Hine's album, part of the documentation of child labor gathered in the early 1900s. Night selling by children was a familiar sight on the city's busy streets, and the caption's note of the boy's home on West 57th Street offers a glimpse of where such young workers came from.
