The gate and stockade of a fortified camp are the focus here, a reminder that the 50th New York Engineers spent as much time building as fighting. Raised in New York, the regiment served with the Army of the Potomac, and in March 1864 it was stationed at Rappahannock Station, a river crossing in northern Virginia that had changed hands during the fall campaigns of 1863. Log stockades like this one guarded the camp's approaches and show how engineer troops applied their skills to their own defense. The caption card's details are unverified, so treat the layout as a record of the site rather than a precise survey.
