Aboard the Flag of Truce boat *New York*, newly released Union prisoners trade their worn, ragged clothing for fresh uniforms in this December 1864 drawing. The scene reflects the exchange of prisoners under a flag of truce, which carried men out of Confederate hands after the formal exchange system had broken down in 1863. The artist's pencil and wash work captures the crowded deck and the men's relief at leaving prison behind, with Charleston, South Carolina, named as the setting.
