Joseph Pennell's title pairs a fruit boat with the view from the windows of the couple's Brooklyn flat, so the sheet is as much about a vantage point at home as about a ship. He drew it in watercolor and gouache over charcoal, a looser, more painterly method than the etchings and lithographs he was best known for. It was reproduced in his 1925 memoir, *The Adventures of an Illustrator*, under the caption "New York from our Brooklyn Flat." Pennell spent much of his career recording New York's harbor and industrial life, and this drawing shows why that waterfront held his attention in the years after World War I.
