Moored on the East River, the boat SOUTHFIELD served as an open-air classroom for children at Bellevue Hospital, and this photograph shows a manual training lesson held outdoors in the fresh air. Such schools were built on the belief that sunlight and air could help children recovering from or at risk of tuberculosis, a disease that was widespread in crowded city neighborhoods in the early 1900s. The print was made by Jessie Tarbox Beals, a New York photographer known for documenting city life and working people. Its caption date falls somewhere between 1900 and 1920, so the image captures the period when open-air education was a new and closely watched experiment in New York.
