Seen from across the East River, the skyline in this c1911 view shows Manhattan's towers rising above the Brooklyn waterfront. The picture's caption card is marked as unverified, so its details come from the old record rather than confirmed sources. Around 1911 the city's tallest buildings, including the Singer Building and the Metropolitan Life Tower, were relatively new symbols of a commercial boom that made lower Manhattan a dense forest of steel-frame offices. Views like this one, taken from Brooklyn, recorded how quickly the financial district was building upward.
